Caroline's "Just Buggin' Around" Blog!

Yes, there is a story behind this blog... but more so the Bug. It is a 1969 VW Beetle that I fell in love with 10 years ago when my dad first bought it. My dad at the time was battling terminal cancer and could no longer drive his big Ford pickup that he so loved. I thought it was very interesting that he chose this vehicle, but as I sit and think back I realize that it wasn't at all surprising. He was a mechanic by trade and really had a fascination and love for cars that he could still work on. There was still hope at the time that dad would beat the cancer and be able to restore the bug and take it to shows. Unfortunately his time ran short and the bug no longer went out. I remember just wanting to get into that bug and take it out... I wanted to restore it! (Even though I didn't know a thing about cars.)
So the story begins 1 month ago when I was able to get the bug from my stepmom. I was so excited like a school kid! I was concerned about the condition of the bug after sitting for 10 years and what it was going to take to get it back up and running. To be cont'd....

As the list grows....so does the excitement!

So this past weekend the Bug was stripped down a little further, revealing more rust damage and more parts to be replaced... but it still hasn't dampened my desire to to move forward.

Inside.... The seats are in very good condition. No damage to them.

This is one of the BIG issues right now. Right inside the passenger door onto the floor is rot from a leaky window. So..... we are tryingto figure out what to do. (The running boards are the easy part.... the underside rust is another story....)

It has been a year since I last posted for not much has changed regarding the bug until this past weekend. My Bug went for another trip on the same trailer with a destination to my brother, Tim's, garage. We bought a battery and once installed this past Saturday, it turned over right away. We all couldn't believe it since it had sat for over 4 to 5 years without ever being started. So the excitement starting bubbling inside again.... What do we need and then want to do to get this piece of history up and running?

So, please feel free to continue to visit this blog as things get going on the Bug.

UPDATE:

As of this past Sunday both brake drums have been taken apart and awaiting new parts. A look over the body reveals a few more areas of decay that will need to be attended to. More to come.....

Coming Home....

On August 28th, 2008, the bug made the journey to its new home. It was bitter sweet moment.... Sweet that it was finally mine and bitter as I was missing my dad. Either way, I knew my dad would be happy with the new venture for the bug.
